History

A few words about BILL TAIT,

The Founder

Bill Tait has spent a lifetime in restaurants, beginning at age 13 as a dishwasher in a country club and working his way through every role, from busboy to fine dining manager, in the Washington, D.C. area. After moving to Oscoda in the late ’80s, he gained local experience as a server and manager before finally realizing his dream: opening his own restaurant. In 2000, Bill and his wife purchased and renovated an old furniture store into Tait’s, designing the kitchen and dining space from scratch to ensure a perfect flow for both staff and guests. Drawing from family recipes and culinary experiences collected over decades, he created a menu full of dishes made from scratch, with care and quality at the heart of every plate. Known for his integrity, respect, and community-mindedness, Bill built Tait’s not just as a place to eat, but as a gathering spot for friends, family, and the wider Oscoda community.

How it all started

Purchased Building in 1997

The Tait’s purchased a former furniture store downtown, beginning renovations to create rental spaces and a restaurant from scratch.

Tait’s bill of Fare Opens

Tait’s Bill of Fare officially opens, offering made-from-scratch dishes inspired by family recipes and a carefully designed kitchen to ensure smooth operations.

Pandemic

During the pandemic, the Tait’s demonstrated their community spirit by offering drive-thru meals and providing rib dinners for first responders including police, fire and EMS.

Transition

Tait’s transitions from a sole proprietorship to an LLC, ensuring a smooth ownership structure for the family and future generations.

Present Day

Under the leadership of Kira Tait as general manager, she aims to expand while continuing to blend tradition with modern upgrades, hosting special events, and upholding the values of quality, integrity, and community that Bill Tait has instilled in this wonderful place so many people love.
